REVIEW: Cirque du Soleil presents Kurios - Cabinet of Curiosities

By Iraines Rivera January 15, 2017

In January 2015, I attended my first Cirque du Soleil show “Amaluna” after my husband surprised me with tickets for Christmas. We were completely blown away with that performance and became instant fans.  From that moment on, we made a vow to not miss any of the shows that come to town.  So, when I was invited to attend the opening night of KURIOS – Cabinet of CuriositiesI quickly jumped at the chance to see the show.

Written and directed by Michel Laprise, KURIOS is about a Renaissance-like man named the Seeker that believes there is another world in his Cabinet of Curiosities.  With the help of his wild imagination, 45 other artists make his steam-punk, mechanical dream world comes to life. With a wonderful blend of intense acrobatics, comedy, and constant live music, KURIOS is a perfect gift to give to anyone of any age this holiday season!

I believe that most of the show is about balance; balance between reality and a dream, the past and future, and the display of strength and balance these artists have gained over years of training to perform their incredible acts. This show offers a little bit of everything for everyone. If you have a vivid imagination then you will have an advantage, but I think that anyone that attends will be amazed and entertained from start to finish. You might even be called upon to participate in the show!

The best thing about this theatrical, modern-day circus is that each show is completely different. With that said, I loved everything about this show.  Which included Aerial Bicycle, Russian Cradle, Invisible Circus, Contortion and Aerial Straps to name a few.

Two of my favorite acts were the Acro Net and Comic Act.  During the Acro Net, we were transported to an ocean world where the artists dressed like underwater creatures jumped on a trampoline-like net that covered the entire stage.  At one point, they were jumping so high, that I thought they were going to fly out of the Big Top.  And the comic act—well, let’s just say I could not stop laughing from the moment they took a young lady from the audience and tried to “seduce” her on stage. I had so much fun, that I am now making plans to see the show for a second time along with a few friends and their kids.
